Information Man

from Capabilities by George William Reece

lyrics

A man walks in and says to me, “Got problems with my sleep.
I’m struggling at work you see – the curve is getting steep.
I’m sick of all the medicine, I’m done with counting sheep.”
And I say, “Why are you telling this to me?”

He says, “You’re Information Man, please tell me what to do.”
And I say, “You’re mistaken, I can’t fix this thing for you.
Discuss it with your boss, or think of finding something new.”
And he says, “Man I hope this information’s free!”

And I say, “Hey-oh-oh! La-da-da-di-di!
I may be Information Man but why you asking me?”

Next in comes a woman who’s as pretty as can be,
She asks me if I think she needs to get some surgery.
“I think my husband could be falling out of love you see.”
And I say, “Why are you telling this to me?”

She says, “You’re Information Man, please tell me what to do.”
And I say, “You’re mistaken, I can’t fix this thing for you.
Sounds like you should talk to your old man and work it through.”
And she says, “Thanks for nothing. Get some empathy!”

And I say, “Hey-oh-oh! La-da-da-di-di!
I may be Information Man but why you asking me?”

I only wanna help – to help you help yourselves –
But every time I see it coming:
“Why you asking me?”

A kid walks in right off the street and says he’s done a crime,
And I say, “You’re so young, you can’t be more than eight or nine.”
And he says, “Only seven, but I’m growing all the time.”
And I say, “Why are you telling this to me?”

He says, “You’re Information Man, please tell me what to do.”
And I say, “You’re mistaken, I can’t fix this thing for you.
Go home to your mum and dad, I’m sure they’ll help you through.”
And then he cried and said they died when he was three.
And I said, “Ok then well tell it all to me.”

And I say, “Hey-oh-oh! La-da-da-di-di!
I may be Information Man but listening is free.”

That’s right. Listen to the band.
