Animal Attraction

from Capabilities by George William Reece

/

lyrics

An alligator’s only ever inches from the ground,
But albatrosses soar so very high.
The alligator’s plural is an easy one to find,
But should ‘albatrosses’ not be ‘albatri’?
We try so hard to count the things that make us who we are,
But then we sing and I feel just like you.
The albatross subsists by eating fishes from the sea,
And alligator, he likes fishing too.

The lion chases everything from zebra to gazelle,
You’d think that she would struggle making friends.
But lion has a veritable swarm of hangers-on,
Despite the brutal message that she sends.
We send each other messages and read between the lines,
But then we sing and everything is clear.
The vulture’s an example and the brave hyena too,
Of drive and hunger overcoming fear.

The dolphin and the donkey may not seem that much alike,
Depending on the angle of your view.
The dolphin’s got some flippers where the donkey’s got his hooves,
But both have got a brain and so have you.
We languish for millennia in deep primordial soup,
But then we sing and rise out of the mud.
The dolphin may be wetter than the donkey ever was,
But both have eyes and teeth and skin and blood.
